Research and Development (R&D) Cell

The R&D Cell is the central office driving VCE’s research strategy and innovation goals.

Overview

It aligns with VCE’s mission of academic excellence and societal impact by initiating the college’s strategic research plan, nurturing a research-friendly environment, and administering both internal and external project funding. To ensure effective governance and quality, the R&D Cell is supported by several committees:

Research Affairs Committee

Oversees institute-wide research planning, coordination among research centers, funding policies, and maintenance of the R&D showcase and publication portal.

Technical Resources Committee

Manages all computing and IT infrastructure for research (servers, networks, software tools, and security policies) to ensure reliable technical support.

Research Promotion Committee

Drives research visibility through organizing awards, publicity, and interdisciplinary research initiatives, and encourages high-impact publications.

Research Student Advisory Committee (RSAC)

Monitors PhD and postgraduate students closely, addressing their academic and administrative issues (progress, registrations, fellowships, etc.) and providing a single-point advisory mechanism.

Sponsored Research Committee

Coordinates externally funded projects and consultancy efforts, processing grant proposals and industry collaborations to expand VCE’s sponsored research portfolio.

Research Ethics Committee

All scholarly activities comply with regulations and ethical standards, while also harnessing external partnerships and resources to advance the college’s research mission

These committees, along with the Dean (R&D) and associated offices, work together to uphold research quality and align R&D activities with VCE’s strategic goals.

Sponsored Research

The R&D Cell facilitates all sponsored research and consultancy projects at VCE. It helps faculty identify funding opportunities (government grants, industry projects, international programs) and supports proposal development. All research proposals are processed through the Dean (R&D) to ensure institutional endorsement and compliance.

Key functions include:

  • Grant Facilitation: Guiding faculty in preparing and submitting proposals to funding agencies. All sponsored research proposals are routed through the Dean (R&D) for review and approval.
  • Project Management: Administering funded projects by setting up accounts, overseeing budgets, and ensuring adherence to sponsor guidelines. The Sponsored Research Committee oversees agreement negotiations, fund disbursement, and reporting to sponsors.
  • Consultancy Services: Promoting industry collaborations and contract research. The R&D Cell matches VCE’s technical expertise with industry needs and provides administrative support for consultancy engagements, strengthening academia–industry partnerships.
These efforts ensure that VCE faculty and students can pursue sponsored research seamlessly, with institutional support for compliance and financial management.

Research Publications

The R&D Cell actively promotes high-quality scholarly publications and scholarly communication at VCE. It maintains an institutional research repository and encourages faculty to publish in reputable journals and conferences. The Research Promotion Committee specifically fosters research visibility by organizing publication awards and recognition programs.

In this area, the R&D Cell:

  • Publication Support: Provides guidance on selecting journals/conferences, handles publication records, and maintains a showcase portal of research outputs to highlight VCE’s research.
  • Awards and Recognition: Coordinates institute-wide awards and incentives for outstanding publications and patents, motivating faculty and students to contribute to the global research community.
Through these initiatives, the R&D Cell ensures that VCE’s research contributions are widely disseminated and recognized, contributing to the college’s academic excellence.

Consultancy and Corporate Training

The R&D Cell expands VCE’s societal impact by encouraging faculty consultancy and corporate training. It helps translate VCE’s expertise into practical solutions for industry and government. This includes identifying consultancy projects, managing intellectual agreements, and organizing training workshops.

Key activities include:

  • Industry Consultancy: Facilitating faculty-led consulting projects in engineering and technology. The cell provides administrative support (proposal submission, budget planning, and contract management) so that experts across departments can deliver services (design, testing, analysis, etc.) to industry clients.
  • Corporate Training: Arranging short-term training programs and workshops for industry professionals and community organizations. These programs leverage VCE faculty expertise (e.g., in renewable energy, computer science, mechanical engineering) and may be offered through the college’s training centers and the Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship.
By nurturing industry ties, the R&D Cell ensures VCE’s research and expertise address real-world challenges while generating additional revenue streams and opportunities for students and faculty.

Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs)

Protecting and commercializing innovations is a major responsibility of the R&D Cell. Under VCE’s official IPR policy, researchers are encouraged to pursue patents, copyrights, and trademarks for their inventions.

The R&D Cell facilitates this by:

  • IP Management: Coordinating invention disclosures, patent filings, and copyright registrations for faculty and students. VCE’s policy stipulates prompt disclosure of inventions to the Dean (R&D), and the R&D Cell guides innovators through the patent application process.
  • Technology Transfer: Liaising with industry and incubation partners to license or commercialize campus inventions. The cell assists in evaluating market potential and negotiating transfer agreements, ensuring the college benefits from research outcomes.
  • IP Awareness: Conducting workshops and seminars on intellectual property, teaching researchers about IP protection, revenue sharing, and compliance with legal standards.
In these ways, the R&D Cell strengthens VCE’s research foundation by turning innovations into assets and encouraging an entrepreneurial mindset, as emphasized by the college’s mission to “apply science and engineering principles in innovative projects”.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Support

The R&D Cell fosters an innovation ecosystem at VCE by supporting startups, incubators, and interdisciplinary projects. It collaborates with the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and affiliated incubation centers (e.g., MSME Incubator, T-Hub programs) to provide mentorship and seed funding.

Initiatives include:

  • Startup Incubation: Helping faculty and student entrepreneurs by connecting them to on-campus incubators and mentorship networks. The cell assists in identifying pilot projects, engaging industry mentors, and preparing proposals for startup grants (e.g., government innovation schemes).
  • Innovation Programs: Organizing ideation workshops, hackathons, and industry-funded challenges that encourage creative problem-solving. These programs bring together students, faculty, and external partners to translate research prototypes into viable products or services.
  • Industry Linkages: Establishing strategic collaborations with corporate and foundation partners for joint labs or sponsored innovation centers. For example, VCE engages with technology parks and industry alliances to co-develop R&D facilities and provide student internships on cutting-edge projects.
By promoting entrepreneurship, the R&D Cell helps translate VCE’s research outcomes into economic and social impact, in line with its mandate to “engage in innovative projects”.
